BRENNEMAN, MYERS posted by Janet K. Pease on Sunday, July 29, 2007

Catherine MYERS in 1850 Amanda, Hancock Co., Ohio census is listed with her probably parents, Adam and Catherine MYERS. Catherine married Daniel BRENNEMAN Allen Co., Ohio 1857. I'm trying to determine if Catherine might be a sister of my (parent-less) Samuel MYERS who married Mary Catherine BRENNEMAN (Daniel's sister) 1857, Allen Co. I cannot find any of these people in the 1860 census. Samuel MYERS died in the Civil War.

CHRIST, CRIST, SMITH posted by Janet K. Pease on Sunday, July 29, 2007

Online Ohio marriages say JACOB Beck (of Amanda, Hancock Co., Ohio) married Sarah CHRIST Sept 1860 Hancock Co but the 1870=1880 census records give Jacob wife's name as "Leah" or "Layer". The family of Daniel and Catherine (SMITH) CRIST of Amanda, Hancock Co have a daughter Leah aged 6 in 1850 and 17 in 1860. Was the given name "Leah" misread as "Sarah"?

MACDONALD, MACKENL, MACKRILL, MCCONNELL, MCCORMEL, MCCRILL posted by Robert McConnell on Friday, August 10, 2007

MCCRILL, MCCONNELL: Were the people with the surname MCCRILL in Hancock County originally MCCONNELLs? In looking at the land purchase in Cass Township, I find that a John MCCONNELL purchased 40 acres of land on May 25, 1835 at 1NENE 1ST PPMN 3 N 11 E34. This is in Cass Township and it appears to match the person who is listed as John MACKENL in the 1840 census in Cass Township. I can find no public land purchases in the name of MCCRILL. In the 1850 census these same people became listed as MACKRILLs. I think they were originally MCCONNELLS and I think they are related to MCCONNELLs in Lawrence County, Ohio. There are two somewhat unusual names that are in both places: Benjamin and Elijah. In Lawrence County, Ohio there is a William Benjamin MCCONNELL, b. 1793 in PA. Previously he lived in Aleppo, Twp, Greene County, PA in 1830. This township borders what was then Virginia (now West Virginia) and some family members are shown as being born in Virginia. John MACKENL’s oldest son in Cass Township, Hancock County, OH as shown in the 1850 census is named Benjamin MACKRILL. John MACKRILL (originally MACKENL) is shown as being born in VA. The other MCCONNELL family in Lawrence County, OH was first listed in the 1840 census as Rodney MCCORMEL. In the 1850 census we see that their first son was named Elijah MCCORMEL, born in VA. These MCCORMELS later became MCCONNELLs in later census records. The oldest member of the MCCRILL family in Washington Twp, Hancock County, OH is named Elijah MCCRILL, b. PA.with a son also named Elijah. Elijah is a very unusual name among MCCONNELLs. I think these families may be related. Through my own DNA analysis, I know the MCCONNELL family in Lawrence County, OH is descended from Somerled who lived from 1100-1166. He drove the Vikings from Northern Ireland and Western Scotland and founded the most powerful clan in Scotland—the MACDONALD clan.

CAPLES, HILL, WARNER posted by Robert K. NUSSER on Friday, August 10, 2007

I am looking for the mother of James M. HILL, born March 18, 1836 in Harrisburg, PA. Died on January 17, 1887 in Fostoria, OH as a result of head injuries which he received in a bar fight. He married Mary A. CAPLES on December 23, 1858. She was born on December 5, 1839 and died November 29, 1894. They were divorced and she may have remarried. James M. HILL's fathers first name is James as well. James HILL SR. was born in 1808 and died at his home in Washington Township, Hancock County, OH on December 7, 1856. Both of the James HILL's are buried in the Fountain Cemetery, Hancock County, Fostoria, OH. I can not find any record of either of their wife's buried with them. On the back of the index file card from the Fountain Cemetery records for James HILL SR. it states "Owned original tract of land ( 5 acres ) which became the original Fountain Cemetery ( the Methodists purchased it from him in 1855 to replace their old cemetery on the hill where the hospital now stands, Cannon Hill ). James M. HILL had a son, Phillip Caples HILL and a daughter Lou HILL WARNER. Any information about the Mrs. James HILL Senior would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
